Frequently asked Interior Design Questions

  • How can an Interior Designer help me?

An Interior Design can help with all aspects of your decorating or renovation project, ensuring it runs smoothly and delivering interiors tailored to fit your needs, tastes and budget.

I regularly work on the following areas, both as individual projects and as part of a larger project:

    • Selecting Paint Colours for a single room or an entire home.

    • Designing guest WC, family or ensuite bathrooms.

    • Helping you design the Kitchen of your dreams.

    • Developing lighting and electrical layouts for a new home or home renovation.

    • Picking the Furniture, Accessories and Artwork for your rooms.

    • Assessing your existing furniture, to decide which pieces to move, donate or discard.

    • Assisting in finding the relevant contractors for your project.

  • Why do I need an Interior Designer?

An Interior Designer will help you dig deep to understand your tastes and needs, and the requirements of your lifestyle to develop a vision for your home.

Using their industry knowledge, they will introduce you to new suppliers and finishes, propose options that expand your vision, and create a cohesive home interior that expresses your unique style.

  • What if I don't know my own Interior Design Style?

The Client Briefing at the outset of the Design Process helps both the Client and the Designer understand Your Style, asking questions and interpreting your responses in relation to the following,

    • Who you are

    • What you care about

    • What you love

    • What you’re sentimental about

    • What you want to express about yourself

  • How do I begin to work with you and what is the process?

Book a complimentary 30 Minute Discovery Call – New Client Questionnaire introduces you and your project goals.

A follow up 2 Hour Home Visit – I get to know you and your family’s requirements and discuss your project in more detail. A Written Report details of the areas of work discussed and provides an estimate of the fitout costs and interior design hours required.

This estimate does not give costs of specific finishes, furniture, accessories, or the cost for contractors to install the fitout.

The Design Process begins with signing the Customer Agreement and paying a deposit.

Should you decide not to proceed, the Written Report gives you clarity on the areas of work to be prioritised and outline costs for your project.

  • How much do you charge?

  • How does the Interior Design Process work?

The Design Process fills in the details for your desired level of fitout, defining the costs of specific finishes, furnishings and accessories, and overseeing installation of all finishes and furnishings until completion of your project.

    From experience, the process can vary from project to project, but will typically follow these steps;

    DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

We record the necessary measurements and images of the job site, along with an inventory of any existing furniture and accessories that will be used in the new design. This information forms the background for our work with you to refine your design vision and the scope of your project, ensuring no detail is omitted.

Having gained a deeper understanding of your tastes and needs, we create a complete design that includes the floor plans, elevations, furniture selections, material samples, paint colours and sketches necessary to convey the design to you and any contractors involved in its implementation.

    PRODUCT ORDERS

After final approval of the design, all necessary products and merchandise will be ordered by the Designer, or purchased by contractors on the project, and invoiced to the Client.

    IMPLEMENTATION AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Depending on project size and scope, implementation may be completed by the Designer, the contractor(s), by the Client, or any combination of the three by agreement.

Throughout the project we work in conjunction with your build team, managing the administration of your interior design orders.

We keep an open line of communication with contractors, painters and installers, and arrange delivery of furniture and other merchandise for a smooth implementation phase.

This phase relies heavily on agreed communication methods – email, text messaging, images and phone calls – for efficiency, clarity of communication and to maintain the timeliness of your project.

    CLOSEOUT

Once the dust has settled, the paint has dried, and the last piece of furniture has been moved into place, we will review the project to make sure you are happy with the final result and come on site to take some photos of the completed project.

Our goal is to make sure that we have met or exceeded your expectations and that you are happy with the look and feel of your new home.

  • How do I prepare for a Home Visit?

The Home Visit focuses on the area you wish to change, what you would like the project to achieve, how long the project is likely to take, and how much your investment will be.

In advance you will be asked to,

    • Take a video or photos of your rooms, existing furniture and art – for discussion.

    • Think about the spaces and how you use them. What works for you, or doesn’t work, and why?

    • Begin to gather images of rooms that you like – consider what it is that attracts you about them. Is it the style, colour, layout, or a particular piece?

    • Consider your likes and dislikes – colours, materials, finishes

  • When do I bring an Interior Designer on board on a build project?

Onboarding an Interior Designer at the same time as your Architect or Contractor will enhance your build project and help create the home of your dreams.

  • Why should I involve the Interior Designer at an early stage?

An Interior Designer’s understanding of the interactions of each area of the build and elements of the design will greatly enhance the cohesive design of your home. They will guide you to make timely decisions at all stages of the project, and advocate for you throughout the process.

  • What is the role of an Interior Designer on a build project?

An Interior Designer liaises between the Architect, Contractor and Trades on a build project, communicating the relevant information about their client’s interior design choices, and ensuring all elements of the design are elegantly incorporated.
