Their once-busy suburban family home no longer suited the needs of this lovely retired couple.

The poorly-insulated house had become too large for their needs, and was very cold and draughty. Health issues meant that keeping warm and climbing the steep staircase had become a daily challenge. Maintaining unused rooms and a large garden, and living far from immediate family added to the list of reasons to move - their adult children encouraged the couple to downsize to a more suitable home.

I helped the couple select the pieces of furniture that would work in their new apartment – including a chest of drawers full of warm clothing which they couldn’t imagine living without.

Family helped with the decluttering task – reclaiming childhood treasures and selling or donating furniture and books that would not be required.

The couple embraced the opportunity to update their interior style for their bright, new-build, A-rated apartment. A palette of muted teal and soft green fabrics was inspired by views to the mountains and the sea, and some dark, wood finishes were chosen to complement the antique furniture they brought with them.

Recliner furniture upholstered in plush, Aquaclean®️ fabrics, and carpets stain-guarded by Fiberseal™️were specified for comfort and easy care; the textured ceramic dining table was chosen to avoid everyday fuss over spills and hot cups; a suite of dining chairs is regularly gathered around the extending dining table for family meals and celebrations, and furnishes the rooms of the apartment when not in use.

During the planning process the clients realised that their once-essential layers of warm clothing would no longer be required!

The couple enjoy greater ease and comfort, living in a warm, manageable home that showcases their favourite pieces of furniture and art. Being located closer to family, health services and their golf club provides peace of mind and easier access to social activity, and regular involvement with their grandchildren enhances everyday life.
