Project Introduction

This complex renovation, featured in the exclusive interiors publication The White Book, transformed a 1980’s stone barn conversion in a spectacular hillside setting that had become dated and no longer met the needs of a growing family. A contemporary modernist extension was carefully designed to introduce additional space while enhancing the architectural presence of the original structure.

The brief was to create a cohesive design scheme that would seamlessly unite the two buildings, delivering elegant yet highly practical family spaces throughout.

Architectural Integration

At the heart of the home, a Louise Kennedy designed Tipperary Crystal chandelier illuminates the vaulted hallway, acting as a focal point and visually connecting the original barn with the new extension. Bespoke forged balustrading on the sweeping stone staircase further strengthens this dialogue between old and new, combining craftsmanship with contemporary clarity.

Interior Design Strategy

To ensure continuity across the expanded footprint, I designed bespoke walnut internal doors and a coordinated suite of contemporary bathrooms, establishing a consistent material language throughout the interior.

Natural stone flooring and honed fire surrounds were specified for the ground floor, introducing texture and permanence. These materials were echoed upstairs through plush carpeting in the bedrooms, creating a sense of refined comfort and luxury underfoot.

A layered palette of rich fabrics and tactile textures was developed for curtains and soft furnishings, paired with calm neutral wall colours to provide an understated backdrop for the owner’s extensive contemporary art collection.

Specialist Spaces

The home also includes carefully considered lifestyle spaces tailored to the family’s needs:

  • A private sauna for the owner, an enthusiastic cyclist, offering a restorative retreat within the home.

  • A cinema room - equipped with reclining seating and a popcorn machine — designed for relaxed family movie nights and children’s celebrations.

  • A vaulted wine cellar and tasting room.
